Introduction

NIPP (or New Integrated Prevention Programme) is a co-ordinated programme of waste prevention initiatives undertaken in the Limerick Clare Kerry waste management region. This initiative which commenced in July 2006 was granted 75% funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Waste Prevention Programme.

The aim of the programme is to demonstrate that waste prevention is achievable in a wide variety of organisations and businesses and most importantly that undertaking waste prevention makes both environmental and financial sense.

Since 2006 the Limerick Clare Kerry Regional Waste Management Office (RWMO) has co-ordinated the NIPP programme on behalf of Limerick City Council and Limerick, Clare and Kerry County Council’s. Personnel from the local authorities worked with organisations within their functional area to deliver waste prevention across a number of sectors. During this process a range of techniques and methodologies were employed.

These were the programmes we undertook:

  • Academia & the public sector: reducing paper consumption.
  • C&D waste reuse and reduction in a city centre mixed use development.
  • Household waste reduction for residents of urban apartments.
  • Waste arisings from retailers in a managed shopping centre.
  • Better management of waste, energy & water at a Regional Airport.
